The first thing you will notice is that the facet joints in the lumbar spine do not permit a lot of rotation due to the concave shape of the joint surfaces. What this means is that as soon as you begin to rotate the lumbar joints the joint surfaces rub together and minimize rotation. If the lumbar spine continues to attempt rotation from the lumbar joints the body has to compensate by damaging ligament or disc tissue (which is never ideal). That is why we see such a high incident of low back problems including disc bulges, disc herniations, degenerative discs, fact joint problems, sacro-illiac joint dysfunction and more. If you have low back pain or discomfort you are going to want to pay attention to what we are telling you in this newsletter and video.
When we move up to the thoracic joints you will notice that the joint surfaces are very flat and smooth permitting smooth and harmonious sliding of the facets which we can call "Rotation." Hopefully this video will be very eye opening for you as you begin to appreciate the natural design of the human spine and how it was meant to function.

MOVING FROM THE THORACIC SPINE (PART I)
A couple of newsletters ago we talked about the importance of rotating from the Hips and Thoracic spine and why the lumbar spine was not the ideal structure to handle rotation. In today's video I wanted to visibly show you the difference between a LUMBAR FACET JOINT and a THORACIC FACET JOINT.
After watching this video you will understand the importance of restoring mobility in the thoracic spine and learning to stabilize the lumbar spine. Regardless of your chosen sport or exercise method, if you are lacking mobility in the thoracic joints (and hips) you will never fully be able to express your full athletic potential because you will either be injured or in pain (or both).
