You shouldn't being doing that!, Why are you lifting those kettlebells, you're pregnant?

Those are some of the most common expressions I have heard during my two pregnancies.  People genuinely are looking out for my well being which I appreciate but I have to admit I get a little annoyed with the lack of knowledge about exercising during pregnancy that seems to be floating around out there. Is pregnancy some type of sickness or disease? Do all the laws of basic physiology and health go out the window when a woman becomes pregnant? Does pregnancy give the mother a license to be in-active and to eat junk food? Are healthy food choices not important during pregnancy? Is pregnancy a reason to stop focusing on healthy lifestyle habits? The answer is NO!!

Now let me begin by saying that every pregnancy is different and each woman must keep in close contact with her doctor about her activity level and choice of exercise. As women we have the number one priority of keeping our baby healthy and maintaining our health as much as possible during the entire nine months of pregnancy. In no way do I want to come across as some sort of pregnancy medical guru because I am not.  I am a physical therapist and movement coach that believes that women can continue to train intelligently during their entire pregnancy provided that there are no pregnancy complications that would inhibit them from exercising or staying active.

I usually recommend to women who plan on getting pregnant that your best bet is to go into your pregnancy as fit as possible. If a woman who is unfit gets pregnant it is not prudent to commence an intense exercise training regimen during pregnancy because it will be such a shock on the body. So once again, the time to get fit is before pregnancy. Ideally the person will always be fit regardless if they are pregnant or not.

I recieve many e-mails from personal trainers who train pregnant women and from expectant mothers all over the country that are quite concerned over their ability to exercise during their pregnancies. This is a normal and natural concern. If a woman has a normal pregnancy with no complications I cannot see why her Doctor wouldn't allow her to continue some form of exercise. Exercise is healthy for so many reasons and their is much research that movement is necessary for the health of the baby. So for all you mommies out their that love kettlebells and have been using them prior to  your pregnancy, as long as you apply safe and intelligent methods you should be able to continue using kettlebells.  If you are new to kettlebell training I would advise that you wait till after your pregnancy to learn how to use kettlebells. Stick with an exercise that your body is already used to and can safely perform. Pregnancy is not the time to begin high intensity power training.

The bottom line is that you must always check with your Doctor to inquire about your health during the pregnancy on whether or not exercise is safe. If it safe and okay for you to do, I see no reason why you cannot contine to use kettlebells during your pregnancy. Of course you are not going to be using heavy kettlebells or setting any world records but most women will able to use an 8kg or 12kg. When in doubt, use a lighter bell.

The video below was taken about a week ago and shows me performing a 5 min snatch test with a 12kg kettlebell.  When I am not pregnant I routinely use a 16kg kettlebell or more for my Snatch training. Using the 12kg has been a safe drop down in weight for me.  If you are used to using a 12kg weight I would drop down to an 8kg (especially in the last trimester of your pregnancy just to be safe).
Be on the lookout for my pregnancy manual that is coming out soon that outlines all of the kettlebell routines, food intake menus and daily subjective feedback I had during my pregnancies. It is actually more of a journal of my experience using kettlebells BEFORE, DURING and AFTER my pregnancies to keep strong, fit and ready for motherhood!

Here are some of the blogposts (and there are much more) I did during my first pregnancy about kettlebell training:
